Outreach Efforts Increase to Amish-Mennonite Dairy Farmers

Photo: Dairy cattle grazing in a pastureThe past decade has shown a decline in the number of dairy cattle and an increase in the number of dairy farms. This phenomena can be explained by the number of 150-head “English” dairy farms that ceased operation. Most of these operations were replaced by an influx of 40-head Amish or Mennonite dairy farms.

Several of these farmers moved to Richland County, Ohio, from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, or Maryland. These farmers have a high level of awareness of water quality concerns. Some are familiar with water quality projects in the Chesapeake Bay area while others left Pennsylvania because they were bought out by high value development dollars.
