First Ohio Minority Farmers' Conference
The first conference directed by Ohio minority farmers was held at Central
State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, on Saturday, March 23, 2002. The
conference, called “Marketing and Managing for Success,” provided information on
improving the productive capability of Ohio’s minority farms and on increasing
profits. This outreach event honored the requests of minority farmers that they
expressed at a meeting led by USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)
and other cosponsors in April 2001.
Breakout
sessions covered six topics: Alternative Enterprises - Marketing and Methods for
Funding Them; Assistance for Tobacco Growers; Contracting with Food Processors;
Economic Development and Marketing; Growing and Marketing Organic Foods; and
Landlord/Tenant Contracts and Agreements. Keynote speaker DeWayne Boyd,
Agricultural Liaison and Chairman of Community to Enhance Resources for
Underserved Farmers (CERUF) addressed the group. Attorney James K. Leonard spoke
on estate planning. Michael Brown, Marketing Executive, Glory Foods, spoke to
the farmers about the benefits of contracting with food processing companies.
