Fully Accessible Playground Area Opens in Stark County
Crossroads Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) provided assistance
to the Jackson Playground Advisory Committee in fund raising and grant writing.
The
group developed a fully accessible playground area in Jackson Township and was
completed and in full operation in 2002. The project was the fruition of three
years of hard work by the Committee and numerous volunteers. The Committee's
goal was twofold, first, to increase community access for citizens with
disabilities, and second, to increase the public’s awareness and understanding
of the needs of those who have developmental disabilities and physical
disabilities. The Committee wanted children to grow up in an environment of
acceptance.
The RC&D Council also served as the fiscal sponsor for donations from both
individuals and private foundations. Over $169,000 in cash, materials, and labor
was donated to the project. The largest single donation was a gift of $30,000.
