5th Annual Small Family Farms Conference

Ohio’s 5th annual Small Family Farms Conference was held on March 18 and 19th, 2005, at Roberts Convention Center in Wilmington, Ohio. Over 100 limited resource and beginner farmers from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia attended the event.

We utilized this conference to inform people of various USDA programs and a wide array of financial and technical assistance options available to producers from our partnering agencies and organizations. We also focused on the Conservation Security Program (CSP) to inform the farmers what they can do to prepare for CSP and possibly place in a higher tier.

Most of the farmers in attendance were beginner farmers. Several of the farmers in Ohio were interested in forming their own small farmers’ organization. Evaluations from conference attendees were overwhelmingly positive. One participant wrote, “All of the sessions that I attended were well presented and offered a wide area of ideas to make farming on a small scale sustainable and profitable.”
