Discover Your World Camp

This project is a joint effort among several partners with shared interests and goals in providing environmental education opportunities to Hispanic children in Ohio. Photo: This group of children is ready to get started on their first day of campThis project is innovative in that it seeks to involve Hispanic children of migrant communities in ongoing environmental education activities utilizing partnerships between NRCS, Erie Basin RC&D, The Ohio State University Extension, Volunteer Center, Firelands Electric, Huron County SWCD staff, Erie Shores Girl Scouts, and Heart of Ohio Boy Scouts.

The “Discover Your World Camp” for migrant children is a multidisciplinary, environmental education program that culminates into a two-day series of learning about non-point source pollution, hazardous waste, wetlands, riparian and ground water issues, nature hikes, arts and crafts, swimming, and a trip to the trading post. The girls make beaded necklaces for women at a local retirement home. The migrant children are able to use all of their senses and relate to their own community while better understanding global issues and learning how to prevent water pollution.
