NRCS Announces Funding for Water Quality Conservation in Three Priority Watersheds

Columbus, Ohio, May 8, 2012 — State Conservationist Terry J. Cosby announced the launch of a new National Water Quality Initiative committed to improving three impaired waterways in Ohio.  USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will manage the initiative by making financial assistance available to farmers and forest landowners in three priority watersheds.  “The National Water Quality Initiative will further NRCS’s partnership efforts to improve water quality using voluntary actions on private lands,” State Conservationist Cosby said.  “This initiative is a focused approach in three priority areas facing significant natural resource challenges.  It bolsters the positive results of landscape conservation initiatives NRCS and its partners already have underway.

NRCS PROVIDES FUNDING FOR AGRICULTURAL PRODUCERS TO IMPROVE THE GREAT LAKES BASIN

Columbus, Ohio, May 7, 2012 – More than $24 million is available to agricultural producers and landowners to improve and protect the waters and resources in the Great Lakes Basin, announced Terry Cosby, State Conservationist for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).  Applications to install specific conservation practices through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) are being accepted for priority ranking through June 8, 2012.

GRAND LAKE ST. MARYS WATERSHED RECEIVES ANOTHER $1 MILLION FROM USDA FOR CONSERVATION TO IMPROVE WATER QUALITY

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 28, 2012 – The Grand Lake St. Marys Watershed received national attention by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to address the critical water quality issues facing residents in the watershed.  “NRCS Chief Dave White provided the Grand Lake St. Marys Watershed with an additional $1 million through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) to get conservation on the ground in this watershed,” State Conservationist Terry Cosby announced.  “There is a sizeable waiting list of producers with high quality EQIP applications in the watershed; those that result in the greatest conservation benefit will be chosen for funding.”

ATTENTION FARMERS IN THE WESTERN LAKE ERIE BASIN WATERSHED! SAVE MONEY, SAVE SOIL, SAVE TIME!

TOLEDO, Ohio, March 19, 2012 – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack travelled to the Western Lake Erie Basin last week to announce that an additional $2 million is now available to farmers in the basin watershed to reduce agricultural phosphorus from entering Lake Erie. Ohio land covers about 4 of the 6 million acres in the western basin watershed, including all or a portion of 19 Ohio counties. Most of these acres are productive farmland.

CONSERVATION FUNDS AVAILABLE FOR FARMERS IN THE HICKORY BRANCH WATERSHED

CELINA, Ohio - January 31, 2012 – Mercer County farmers in the Hickory Branch Watershed have another opportunity to sign up for financial assistance to carry out conservation practices through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP).  These conservation practices include livestock waste management, fencing for excluding livestock from streams, planting cover crops, planting buffer areas between crops and streams to catch run-off, and other practices.

Funding Applications for Wetlands Habitat Improvement Accepted until February 10, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio – State Conservationist Terry Cosby announced today the availability of Wetlands Reserve Enhancement Program (WREP) funding to enter into agreements with eligible partners to carry out high priority wetland protection, restoration and enhancement activities on eligible lands.  “Nationally, up to $17 million is available through General WREP for wetlands restoration and enhancements on a competitive basis,” said Cosby.  “Eligible partners are encouraged to submit WREP proposals to our state office by February 10, 2012.
