Watershed DescriptionThe Huron-Vermilion Watershed covers approximately 453,500 acres in Huron, Erie, Lorain, Ashland, Richland, Crawford and Seneca Counties in north central Ohio. Land use in this watershed is primarily cropland, with some forest and urban land. Recently the watershed has witnessed a dramatic increase in housing development. The topography in the watershed ranges from flat to rolling terrain in the upper section of the watershed to very rolling terrain in the lower portions of the watershed. In the Huron-Vermilion Watershed there are about 1,368 farms covering about 314,657 acres. The average farm size in the Huron Vermilion watershed is 200 acres. Primary crops include soybeans, corn and small grains. Nursery, small fruit, vegetable and greenhouse crops are also important to the economy. There are about 376 livestock operations in the Huron-Vermilion Watershed including dairy, beef, hogs, horses, goats and chickens. Pastureland in the watershed consists of about 15,000 acres.
