Updated March 22, 2005

Watershed Description

The Upper Maumee Watershed covers approximately 121,852 acres in Defiance and Paulding Counties in northwest Ohio.

Land uses of farms in this watershed consist of cropland, irrigated cropland, and pastureland.  The watershed area is a combination of Erie-Huron Lake Plain and the Indiana and Ohio Till Plain resource areas.  The topography ranges from gently sloping glacial till plain, broken in place by hilly moraines, kames, and outwash terraces in the west and the southern parts, and nearly level broad lake plains with some beach ridges and lower moraines in the northeast and central parts.  The soils are deep and range from clay soils to coarse soils throughout.

There are 407 Ohio farms in the watershed covering about 111,873 acres.  The average size farm is 275 acres in Ohio.  Primary crops include corn, soybeans, wheat, confined livestock (hogs), and some beef cattle.
