2009 Grand Lake St. Marys Special EQIP Demonstation Project

A meeting is scheduled for June 10, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the Montezuma Fire Department, 6805 State Route 219, Montezuma, Ohio, to explain this Demonstration Project.

Do you have a farming operation in the Grand Lake St. Marys Watershed? If so, be sure to check out the new Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) Demonstration Project being offered in Mercer and Auglaize Counties!

A special Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) Demonstration Project, initiated last year, will continue to be offered again this year for farmers in the Grand Lake St. Marys Watershed. Through this program, farmers in portions of Auglaize and Mercer counties will be eligible to receive fi nancial and technical assistance to implement conservation practices aimed at keeping nutrients and sediment out of Grand Lake.

The sign-up period runs from June 1 through June 26, 2009. This year, the conservation practices that are available in this project have been expanded to offer more ways farmers can manage their land to keep nutrients and sediment on the land and out of the lake. Conservation practices such as buffer strips along creeks running into Grand Lake St. Marys, and the planting of cover crops will be offered, along with manure management options.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service will provide cost incentives to cover a majority of the conservation practice costs, with the remaining covered by participating farmers, who must meet eligibility requirements established by the NRCS’ Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP).

This program is competitive and all applications will be ranked and placed into categories. Ranking will be based on considerations such as:

• Does the applicant have an active Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan?
• Does the applicant have an approved Nutrient Management plan by a certifi ed crop advisor?
• What is the distance from the farm Headquarters to Grand Lake St. Marys?
