1.      Start using ArcMap with a new empty map.  Add data by browsing to the F drive.  Load the soil shape file found on the F drive in the folder geodata and the folder soils in the folder spatial (eg. soilmu_a_oh057.shp).  If the Soil Data Viewer icon is not shown on the task bar (shown below the arrow in the figure above) follow instructions in step 2.  If Soil Data Viewer icon is showing and is highlighted, go to step 3.  Note: the Soil Data Viewer icon may be in a different location on your machine.

2.      To load Soil Data Viewer, in ArcMap right click somewhere in a clear area of the ArcMap tool bar or menu bar.  From the list that appears, select “Soil Data Viewer Tools”.  The Soil Data Viewer icon should now be showing on the ArcView task bar.

3.      To start Soil Data Viewer click on the Soil Data Viewer icon.

After starting Soil Data Viewer, select the soil map layer by highlighting the Map Layer Source and then click on the OK button.

If you have not previously selected a valid soil database, you will have to do so.  Click on the folder button in the Database line.  Browse to the soil database file that matches the soil map layer previously selected.  This should be on the F drive under the folder geodata and the folder soils.  If both the soil map layer and the soil database match the Synchronization Status will show “All map units in sync.

    Click on a desired folder under the Attribute Folders tab to open up a list of reports.

1.      Click on the Reports Option tab to get the list of map units.  By default, all map units will be selected initially.  If not all map units are desired, click on the Unselect All button.  To select more than one map unit, hold down the Control key while selecting individual map units or click on the “Select All” button for all map units.

2.      Click on the Ratings Option button to aggregate the data or to exclude minor components.

3.      After map units are selected, click on the Generate Report button to run the report.

Creating a thematic map using Soil Data Viewer - Instructions

  1. Select the desired report under the Attribute Folders tab.  Select the Rating Options, if desired.  Click on the Generate Map button to produce a thematic map in ArcMap.  This will add a layer to the ArcMap project.
