Ohio State Fair ExhibitMiamian Soil Profile

This year at the 2009 Ohio State Fair, NRCS will feature the wonderful world of Ohio’s soils!  Visitors will see several soil monoliths, which are large cross sections of soil 4-6 feet tall mounted on a board.  One monolith will show Ohio’s state soil (Miamian).

Infiltration modelAn infiltration kit demonstrating how water moves through different types of tillage systems will also be available for visitors to see.  Many fairgoers are urban residents who have never heard of no-till, clean-till, or even tillage!  This clear, custom made infiltration model will allow people to see the water as it moves through the soil and what comes out with the water as it moves through the soil to the exit point.

The highlight of the exhibit will be the soil painting.  Paints made with soils from around Ohio and from other states will be on hand for kids to paint pictures with on July 29, August 2, and August 6th.  An exhibit featuring art created with soil paints will show some of the Lewis and Clark Expedition findings as they made their way west.   Lewis and Clark Soil Painting Display

So come visit NRCS in Columbus at the Ohio State Fair July 29 – August 9.  We’re in the Ag and Horticulture Building, the one with the corn climbing wall.  Hope to see you there!
